How Fungus Gets Into The Lawn

How Fungus Gets Into The Lawn

Florida lawns often get fungus because the warm, humid, and rainy climate creates the perfect environment for fungal diseases to thrive. Here are the main ways fungus develops in Florida lawns:

1. Weather Conditions

  • High humidity, frequent rain, and warm temperatures create the ideal breeding ground for lawn fungi.
  • Extended periods of wet grass, especially at night, allow spores to grow and spread.

2. Watering Issues

  • Watering late in the evening keeps the lawn damp overnight, encouraging fungus.
  • Poor drainage or low-lying areas where water sits also cause fungal outbreaks.

3. Lawn Stress

  • Lawns under stress (from drought, improper mowing height, nutrient deficiencies, or compacted soil) are more vulnerable.
  • Stressed grass cannot fight off fungal infections as well.

4. Mowing Practices

  • Mowing too short (“scalping”) weakens grass and exposes soil, making it easier for fungi to take hold.
  • Mowers can also spread fungal spores from one part of the yard to another.

5. Existing Spores in Soil

  • Fungal spores are always present in Florida soil. They lie dormant until the right conditions (moisture + warmth + stressed grass) trigger an outbreak.

Common fungal problems in Florida lawns include brown patch (large patch), dollar spot, gray leaf spot, fairy ring, and pythium blight.
