Rain, Rain, Termites Play: Understanding Swarm Season in Sarasota & Manatee

As the dry spell ends and Sarasota and Manatee counties welcome the much-needed rain, another less-welcome visitor emerges: swarming termites. At Westfall's Pest Control, we've observed that the transition from drought to rainfall creates the perfect storm for termite swarms.

Why Termites Swarm After Rain

Termites are moisture-loving insects. After a prolonged dry period, the sudden onset of rain increases humidity and softens the soil, signaling to termites that it's time to reproduce and establish new colonies. This phenomenon is particularly evident in Florida's climate, where warm temperatures and high humidity create ideal conditions for termite activity.

Swarming Season in Sarasota & Manatee

In our region, termite swarming primarily occurs from late winter through early summer. Subterranean termites, the most common type in Florida, typically swarm in the spring, often after a rain shower. Drywood termites, on the other hand, tend to swarm in the late spring to early summer months.

Identifying a Termite Swarm

Swarming termites, or alates, are winged reproductive adults that leave their colonies to mate and establish new ones. They are often mistaken for flying ants, but there are distinct differences. Termites have straight antennae, a uniform waist, and equal-sized wings, while ants have bent antennae, a narrow waist, and forewings larger than hindwings.

After swarming, termites shed their wings, so you may find piles of discarded wings near windowsills or doorways.

Preventing Termite Infestations

To protect your home during swarming season, consider the following tips:

  • Reduce Moisture: Fix leaky faucets, ensure proper drainage, and use dehumidifiers in damp areas.

  • Seal Entry Points: Inspect your home's foundation for cracks and seal them to prevent termites from entering.

  • Maintain Landscaping: Keep mulch and woodpiles away from your home's foundation.

  • Regular Inspections: Schedule annual termite inspections with a professional pest control service.
