Roof Rats in the Older Tree Canopy

West and central Bradenton have mature live oaks and old palms, and the canopy in neighborhoods like Village of the Arts, Ballard Park and the streets off Manatee Avenue often touches rooflines. Roof rats travel that canopy, drop onto the roof, and get in through gable vents, soffit gaps, and the space where the fascia meets the roof deck. They rarely come in at ground level, which is why ground-level traps and bait boxes alone do not solve it.

Scratching overhead at night, droppings in the garage or attic, and chewed wiring are the usual first signs. Activity picks up as the weather cools and rats start looking for somewhere warm, which puts October through February at the top of the range.

German cockroaches are smaller, tan, and stay indoors near warmth and moisture. They breed fast and they are almost always brought in rather than wandering in. A German roach problem is a treatment plan, not a single spray.

Ghost Ants, White-Footed Ants and Fire Ants

Both shrug off store-bought sprays, and worse, spraying a trail can cause the colony to bud into several smaller colonies, which turns one problem into four.

Fire ants are the outdoor problem, and they are worst on recently disturbed ground. If you are in a newer subdivision east of I-75 or anywhere sod went down in the last few years, expect mounds after every heavy rain.

We bait rather than blanket-spray for ants, because bait travels back to the queen and spray does not.

Mosquitoes Along the River and Creek Corridors

Properties near the Manatee River, Braden River, Ware's Creek and Bowlees Creek, and anything backing onto a retention pond, carry noticeably heavier mosquito pressure than properties a few streets inland. Standing water in a bromeliad, a clogged gutter or an untended birdbath produces adults in about a week.

Manatee County runs its own mosquito control district for public land and roadside ditches, but nothing they do covers what is breeding in your yard. That part is on the property.
